M-ary variable period modulation is proposed in this paper as a candidate modulation scheme for an indoor visible light communication system. The principle of M-ary variable period modulation is described in details, the parameter selection guide and flicker mitigation and dimming control choices are discussed. Theoretical analysis and experimental results indicate that the method proposed is effective for an indoor visible light communication system.
