Abstract

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common degenerative joint disease leading to significant disability and morbidity due to key irreversible changes including defective cartilage extracellular matrix remodeling and loss of chondrocytes. Many studies have documented occurrence of arthritis in the human temporomandibular joints and its similarities to hip and knee joints but they have not looked into the detailed pathophysiology of the process. Our recent study showed that lysyl oxidase like-2 (LOXL2) is elevated in the regenerative response during mouse fracture healing and promotes chondrocyte differentiation.
