Abstract
A lyoluminescence (LL) reader was constructed and the response of irradiated dl-alanine and sucrose was investigated as a function of the sensitizer concentration, solution pH, mass of material and absorbed dose. The LL readings were compared with the signals of the same irradiated materials obtained with an electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometer. It was found that under optimum conditions LL can detect doses as low as 0.3 Gy and that the calibration curves saturate at doses in the range of 20–500 Gy depending on the sensitizer concentration. ESR on the other hand worked better to assess higher doses in the range 10-4 kGy.
