Abstract

The thymus of the teleost fish, Rutilus rutilus contains lymphoblasts and thymocytes within a reticular network, formed by epithelial cells which show tonofilaments and desmosomes. Myoid cells are always present, while epithelial cysts appeared mainly in older fish. Hassall's bodies do not exist in these teleost fish, but macrophages, secretory-like cells and plasmablasts were present. The organization of the thymic capsule and blood vessels is discussed in relation to existence of a “bloodthymus”, barrier.
