Thompson, R. I. Abstract New calculations of the ionization from zero-age main-sequence (ZAMS) stars are presented. Ionization-bounded calculations for photoionization, both from the n = 1 and the n = 2 level of hydrogen, are presented. The n = 2 calculations are used to show that the suggestion of Balmer continuum ionization proposed by Simon et al. can account for the observed hydrogen-line excess in obscured ZAMS objects. The present results show that Balmer continuum ionization is more than adequate for the production of the observed excess.
