Abstract

Matrix equations of the form C aX − XC T b = Y where C a and C b are companion matrices, are considered. In a first step (1) is reduced to an equation for which the solution is Hankel and the right side has rank 2 at most. In a second step a solvability condition and a general solution are given in terms of the polynomials a(λ), b(λ) and the solution of some polynomial congruence. An application to resultant matrix equations is included.
