Abstract
Abstract A density modulated electron stream will suffer amplitude reduction and phase variation with transit time due to the statistical velocity distribution of the electrons. The problem is considered in relation to that of noise generation in a beam due to velocity fluctuation; the analysis developed is then used in examining the variation of space-charge reduction factor (Λ2) under particular laws of potential distribution which present themselves in physical problems.
