Abstract

Changes in the treatments of fractures in cattle. It is now possible to repair long bone fractures in calves weighing less than 100 kg. However, osteosynthesis with a semi-rigid plate is not recommended in cattle and we use a rigid external fixation system. Three external fixators are described : the JAM (Jean-Alphonse Meynard) device, the Acrylic Pin External Fixation (APEF) system, adapted to bone repair in calves to reduce cost, and the FESSA external fixator designed by the French Armed Forces Health Service, of excellent quality, but whose use is limited in our practice due to its high cost. We describe the operating techniques using these fixation systems to repair fractures of the canon bone, tibia, femur, and mandible. In a series of 100 cases, we obtained 80% of good and excellent results. In rural practices, external fixators provide satisfactory results at a cost compatible with the economic requirements of livestock production.
