Abstract

Systemic lupus erythematosus, a chronic autoimmune disease, can impact functional status. Online surveys were collected from 177 individuals with lupus. Results indicated respondents were affected in their ability to: complete activities of daily living (96%), work (85.3%) and go to school (24.9%). Despite these challenges, fewer than 15% had been referred for rehabilitation counseling. Healthcare providers assessed respondents’ functional status at fewer than 50% of visits. Providers must become more aware of the impact of lupus on functioning, and refer individuals for rehabilitation evaluation and services. An interdisciplinary approach is needed to optimize quality of life for individuals with lupus.
