Abstract

Solar activity and proton production varies a great deal according to the record left behind in lunar rocks. Robert C. Reedy, chemist at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, reports that average proton fluxes for solar cycle 19 (1954–1964) are about 5 times those of solar cycle 20 (1965–1975). Reedy's measurements centered on depth versus activity of three radionuclides, 56Co, 22Na, and 55Fe, in lunar rocks gathered on early Apollo missions.
