Abstract

Recently, observations and theory have been combined to relate sunspot activity, luminosity, and even X ray corona structure with the sun's rate of rotation. According to W. Waller of the Harvard‐Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, who reported recently on a workshop on magnetic activity in lab‐type stars, a new theory is emerging which tries to link rotation to stellar activity. It is based on the model of a magnetic dynamo, whereby swirling motions within the stellar core induce a large‐scale magnetic field. Because some parts of the star rotate faster than others, the magnetic field becomes frayed and twisted at its extremities.
