Abstract

Luminescent coordination compounds have witnessed tremendous growth as cell imaging agents. Considering the rapid development of this research area, in this chapter, we provide a comprehensive overview of the recent applications of luminescent metal complexes in cell imaging. The luminescent metal complexes reviewed, including luminescent transition metal complexes and near-infrared (NIR) emissive lanthanide complexes, display excellent photophysical and photochemical properties and good biocompatibility for cell imaging and sensing. Meanwhile, the future prospect of such a kind of fascinating luminescent compounds in this rapidly growing field is addressed.
