Abstract

Ba2GeO4: Eu3+ and Tb3+ phosphors are prepared by high temperature solid state reaction method. The prepared powder samples have been characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy and Photoluminescence (PL) studies. XRD patterns of the powder samples confirm as orthorhombic structure. Elements are present in the composition are Ba, Ge, O, Eu and Tb as confirmed from EDS. In the photoluminescence studies, Ba2GeO4: Eu3+ and Tb3+ phosphors exhibit strong red and green emissions at 612 nm and 542 nm under UV excitation respectively. It is corresponding to the 5D0 → 7F2 transition of Eu3+ ions and 5D4 → 7F5 transition of Tb3+ ions. The CIE chromaticity coordinate diagram confirms that the synthesized phosphors are emitting red and green color. Based on these results, it may be useful as red and green emitting phosphors in the lamps and display devices.
