Abstract

Recently, we have reported very efficient Eu2+ emission in several chlorides, bromides and iodides. Luminescence intensities in these hosts were comparable to those reported for commercial lamp phosphors. Blue luminescence with near UV excitation has been observed in these phosphors. However, there is no data available on Cu+ luminescence in rubidium halides. New results on 3d activators Cu+ and Mn2+ emission in RbCaCl3 host are reported in this paper, thus extending the list of Cu+ activated phosphors. In contrast to 4f activators Eu2+ and Yb2+, Cu+ and Mn2+ emissions are weak. However, there is efficient Yb2+–Mn2+ energy transfer.
