Abstract

The luminescence properties of Sm 2+ in Sr 2B 5O 9R (R=Cl, Br) have been studied and compared with those in SrB 4O 7. In the range from 80 to 300 K the emission of Sm 2+ in Sr 2B 5O 9R is predominantly due to the 4f 55d → 4f 6 transition, while SrB 4O 7 : Sm 2+ shows a very efficient emission of the 4f 6 → 4f 6 type. Differences in the luminescence of Sm 2+ in the strontium haloborates and tetraborate are discussed.
