Abstract
The technique of hypotensive epidural anesthesia for lumbar spine fusion is described. The major benefit is reduced blood loss. The other is early emergence from general anesthesia and the option for postoperative thoracic epidural analgesia. This technique requires skill at thoracic epidural anesthesia in patients with deformed spines, facility at performing hemodynamic monitoring, and a preparedness to closely monitor patients intraoperatively to optimize their physiology.
