Abstract

Lucerne cultivars were compared at different Manawatu sites and under different management regimes in twelve trials. Cool season plot yields were increased by introducing grass, only for cool season dormant cultivars. Cool season active cujtjvars appeared to be more tolerant of frequent cutting. Rere and Oranga, the aphid r&stant cultivars bred in New Zealand, performed well. Cool season active cultivars are a better means of increasing available feed in early spring than sowing grass into lucerne stands.
