Abstract

Pacioli's treatise, De Computis et Scripturis, is the first known published text describing the double entry bookkeeping system. This paper reviews accusations of plagiarism and examines several pieces of new evidence, put forward by the author, which suggest that this tractatus is not a single work written as a single unified text. On the contrary, it seems to be composed of at least two distinct parts with significant differences between them.
