Abstract

Couple stresses may have a significant effect on the behaviour of bearings and a generalized Reynolds equation is derived to include these effects. The problem of the short journal bearing is analysed. An increase in the effective viscosity increases the load-carrying capacity and frictional drag and decreases the coefficient of friction. The longer the chain length of the lubricant or of the additive molecule is, the greater are the effects due to couple stresses.
