Abstract

ABSTRACT According to the thin-layer electrochemistry and transient electrochemistry principles, two kinds of all-newtransient electrochemical multi-component gas sensors — porous thin-layer electrode coulometric (PTLEC) gas and pulse potential modulated (PPM) gas were presented in this paper. As compared withconventional steady electrochemical gas sensors, they have made a new breakthrough in optimizing the sensor performance characteristics and developing the sensor functions, as illustrated by the case of detection of 02 + N20(gas anaesthetic) and CO2 + 02 (biorespiratory gases) gas mixtures. Keywords: Transient electrochemical sensors, Porous thin-layer electrode coulometric (PTLEC) gas sensors, Pulsepotential modulated (PPM) gas sensors, Multi-component gases 1. INTRODUCTION Electrochemical gas sensors is an electrochemical cell and the detection of the concentration (or partial pressure) of a particular gas component is performed either by electro-oxidation or electro-reduction of the gas samples at asensing (working) electrode surface. The currently successful electrochemical gas sensors are mostly steady with
