Abstract

In this paper a dual ring metropolitan area network (MAN) employing spatial reuse is proposed for the interconnection of base stations in distributed control wireless personal communication networks (PCNs). A preemptive priority mechanism is introduced that can support effectively voice/data personal communication services. The operation of the proposed mechanism does not require the wastage of channel bandwidth and can preempt the transmission of low priority packets (such as data packets) for as long as there are active high priority classes (such as voice traffic) in the system. In this way, the effect of low priority traffic on high priority traffic can be minimized and the effect of station location on performance can be significantly reduced. Furthermore, a fair share of the transmission bandwidth among similar priority traffic sources can be achieved. Simulation results are used to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed mechanism in the presence of two priority classes and the system performance under voice/data transmissions is discussed.© (1996) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
