Abstract

ABSTRACTAn optical fiber pyrometer prototype for accurate measurement of over—heating gas temperature has beendeveloped in this paper. The paper describes the developement of novel optical fiber pyrometer and its technique , which could have the potential of measuring temperature up to 2000 C . The working principle of the pyrometer is based on Planck's Law and Stephen—Boltzmann's Law. The test results are presented.Key words pyrometer optical fiber sensor radiant emittance1. INTRODUCTIONThe problem of over—heating gas temperature measurement was first reported for the measurement of ex-haust gas temperature (EGT) . In engineering , the meaurement and control of EGT of turbine and aircraft en-gines are important for their efficient operation'. Inaccurate measurements can lead to an increase in fuel con-sumption, loss of thrust and over—heating of the turbine blades. Accurate measurements of GET have alwaysbeen difficult to make due to the severity of the operating environments. The EGT of turbine engines can varyfrom 700 t to above 1 800 C depending upon the engine type and measurement point. Conventional thermocou-pies can measure temperatures up to about 115OC. but above this temperature the EGT is not generally moni-
