Abstract

ABSTRACT Information technology has shown rapid progress both in quantity and quality. Optics can be advantageously employed in information systems because of their potential for high bandwidth, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and capabili-ty of massively parallel processing. After the brief introduction on the present information—oriented products inJapanese optoelectronic industry, research activities in Japan on optical information processing, or optical computing, are reviewed in five categories: 1) devices, 2)optical interconnects, 3) optical analog information processing, 4) optical digital information processing, and 5) optical neural networks. Some relevant organizational activities are also shown. 1. INTRODUCTIONJapan is famous for its production of optoelectronic devices and systems relevant toinformation technology such as optical communication and optical disk memories, which are believed to have affected the development of the so-called informationsociety1. The amount of optoelectronic production in Japan in the fiscal year of
