Abstract

E. LudmanRome Air Development CenterHanscom AFB, Massachusetts 01731AbstractA microcomputer -based real-time programmable optical signal processing systemutilizing a Magneto-Optic Spatial Light Modulator (MOSLM) and a Liquid Crystal LightValve (LCLV) is described. This system can perform a myriad of complicated opticaloperations, such as image correlation, image subtraction, matrix multiplication and manyothers. The important assets of this proposed system must be the programmability and thecapability of real -time addressing. The design specification and the progress towardpractical implementation of this proposed system are discussed. Some preliminaryexperimental demonstrations are conducted. The feasible applications of this proposedsystem to image correlation for optical pattern recognition, image subtraction for ICchip inspection and matrix multiplication for optical computing are demonstrated.IntroductionThe two dimensional optical processing has been used in a wide variety of applicationswhere the large capacity and parallel processing capability of optics are exploited.
