Abstract

ABSTRACT To extract and recognize topographic symbols from topographic contour maps is a practical problem in the field of pattern recognition. In this paper, we try to put forward an effective method to solve thisproblem. By using the method, the symbols are first entracted from the topographic contour maps byeliminating the background of the symbols, and then they are recognized by a neural net, the Hamming net. Experimental results show the effectiveness of this method. 1 . INTRODUCTION Today most of the topographic mapping results are stored in the form of topographic contour maps,and topographic symbols play an important role in them. Automatic extraction and recognition of topographic symbols can make such people as geological prospectors and millitary commanders to locateand recognize objectives quickly and correctly.To extract and recognize topographic symbols from topographic contour maps is a very complicated work.
