Abstract

ABSTRACT A simple technique of measuring the polar magneto—optical Kerr effect using a rotating analyzer is developed. The technique of the rotating analyzer ellipsometer is adopted for the measurement of polarization state of light. The light intensities are digitized automatically by the simple system consisted of an analog-to-digital converterand a micro-encoder and then Fourier transformed. The expressions of rotation angle 9 and ellipticity angleare obtained in terms of the Fourier coefficients of the light intensity versus rotating analyzer. This technique isapplied to 0 and measurement of Co/Pt films. The precision of 0.01° in angle measurement is verified. 1. INTRODUCTION One of the most promising technology for erasable optical recording is based on the polar magneto-optical ( MO) Kerr effect. This effect can be explained in terms of circular birefringence and circular dichroism of the MOmaterial.1 When a linearly polarized light makes a normal incidence on a MO specimen, the plane of polarization
