Abstract

ABSTRACTWe have developed a software package for interactive design of optical systems. This software has extensive graphic visualization methods to interactively study the alignmentcharacteristics of an optical system. The optical system layout, the multi-dimensional opticalparameter spaces, and the image space can be displayed on a computer screen. The user can interactively vary one or more design and alignment parameters and analyze the corresponding behavior of the system. This results in a very powerful design tool. In thispaper we present some details of the software package and preliminary results in optical system design and alignment. 1. INTRODUCTION Optical system design (OSD) is based on well-known optical principles expressed as a set of well defined mathematical expressions. These mathematical operations have been incorporated into software and are commercially available as optical design codes, CODEV, ACOS, etc. An expert optical designer defines a 'figure of merit' and then guided by heuristicrules, uses one of the optical codes in an iterative manner to arrive at a design to optimize the'figure of merit'.
