Abstract

An image sequence analysis system for analysis of object movement from film rolls or tapes is developed in our lab. The system hardware consists of a film winding apparatus, a CCD camera with an image card and a PC system. The main features of the software include correlation tracking, several pattern recognition tracking, trajectory estimation and lens distortion calibration, etc., A new approach with improved SUSAN (Smallest Univalue Segment Assimilating Nucleus) filtering is developed to make the correlation tracking more stable and accurate. SUSAN filtering can filter off noise and preserve edges, even sharpen the edges. We improved SUSAN filter with an adaptive threshold. The SUSAN filtering is applied on the target image before correlation tracking is performed. The results show that the peak of the correlation coefficients increases considerably and the tracking results are more stable and accurate than those without this filtering are. Furthermore, two correlation algorithms for sub-pixel accuracy location are compared for accuracy and speed.
