<title>Future Gardens holographic installation</title>

Abstract

ABSTRACT Future Gardens is a large scale installation of over forty 30 X 40 cm holograms housed in a sight specific 17 X 10 X 10 foot structure. The lighting for each of the holograms is controlled using a computer program, performed much the same as a musicscore. Along with the sound created for the work, this lighting control allows the creation of another level of mood or expressionwith holography. Video and Holographic Installation Work When I first started working in holography, after more than a decade in video and photography, I was interested in the idea ofcombining holography with installation work. As with some of my previous video work I saw holographic installations as anopportunity to create on a larger scale, within a defined space -movingaway from a single framed work. Many other hologra-phers have been doing impressive work in this area for some time. When you step into an entire space created by painters,sculptors or holographers I think the viewer can feel more closely associated with what the artist is saying. I sensed many sim-ilarities in the design of holographic and video installations. In both the viewer is looking into a source of light, but in videothe viewer is more aware of the framing of that light (TV monitor) especially in the case of multiple small monitor installations.An example of this and an early influence on my work is the video installation TV Garden by the artist Nam June Paik, done inthe early 70's.In holography, especially in white light transmission work, the more intense light makes the images seem to be frameless. Socompositions confined to the frame in video are freed in holography. When you start to combine holography with computercontrolled lighting and sound you bring the capacity for motion, animation, and multiple imaging, although not yet strong rivalsfor video's capabilities in this regard, but very interestingly different.
