Abstract

ABSTRACT Fractal coding of digital images offers many promising qualities. However the coding process suffers from the longsearch time in the Domain Block Pool. We present a novel idea for speeding up search and improving compressive ratio, based on the hypothesis that those correlative Range Blocks should have a common code. Experimental result on 512 x 512 Lenna image is 32.8 dB at 0.625 b/pixel and 29.76 dB at O.214b/pixel.Key words: Fractal Block Coding, Range Block, Domain Block, Cluster 1. FRACTAL BLOCK CODING AND VECTOR QUANTIZATION Fractal compression is based on the mathematical theory of Iterated Function System proposed by Hutchinson andBarnsley. Afterward, this theory was developed into fractal theory of Iterated Function System defmed piecewise and usedinto digital image compression by Jacquin ' . This fractal compression is referred to as Fractal Block Coding(FBC).Both Fractal Block Coding and image coding based on Vector Quantization(VQ) are very similar and belong to blockcoding. The original image is partitioned into image blocks of various size and each block has its own code. In encoding
