Abstract

ABSTRACTCurrent trends of fiber optic sensor technology are in a direction ofabroadening scope of sensor innovation based on a few basic concepts. Both single mode and multimode fibers havetheir proponents; single mode for primarily interferometric sensors and multimode forprimarilyamplitude modulated sensors. This paper will illustrate four unique and innovaUve multimodesensor designs and will also discuss the basic inhibition to more rapid utilization ofoptical fibersensors. A case will be made for more effort in standardization of optical fiber sensor interfacedesign and integration requirements. To benefit the optical fiber sensor R&D and small businesscommunity, attention to system level requirements is necessary to encourage greater utilizationand achieve greater exploitation of the benefits offered by optical fibersensors.
