Abstract

ABSTRACT Boundary element methods are attractive tools in the analysis of complex coupled problems. This method has been used in several engineering disciplines as a computationally efficient andversatile technique. Three boundary element methods that can be used to analyze linear electroe-lastic response of piezoelectric materials are presented in this paper. The three methods describedin this paper are identified as the direct boundary element method, fictitious stress-electric chargemethod and the indirect boundary element method. The formulation of the three methods is dis-cussed. Closed form solutions for the kernel functions appearing in the integral equations arealso presented for the two-dimensional case. The methods can be extended to three-dimensional problems involving piecewise nonhomogeneous piezoelectric materials. Keywords: boundary element method, computational mechanics, displacements, electroelasticfields, Green's functions, piezoelectric, stresses, smart structures.
