Abstract

Biologically-based systems are ideal candidates for contraband and explosives detection systems. Antibodies, in particular, due to their high sensitivity and high specificity, and inherent ability to be manipulated to exploit desired characteristics are ideally suited to be a 'detector'. Recent advances in their manufacture make antibodies inexpensive, with repeatable and reliable characteristics. The key element to their success as detectors for contraband and explosives is their immobilization onto substrates which facilitates their use in field applications and maximizes their 'detector' capabilities. This paper will discuss several emerging antibody and biologically-based detection systems and their potential for use in detecting contraband and explosives.© (1997) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
