Abstract

It is well-known that exchange between metal and its ion in solution occurs on the surface of the metal. The removal of 203Hg from an aqueous solution with mercury metal has been studied using the techniques of this exchange reaction. When each of aqueous, I N HCl, I N HNO3 and I N NaNO3 solution containing trace amounts of 203Hg was shaked vigorously with mercury metal for about 10 min, 203Hg was removed from the solution up to 90-100%. From the experimental results it was found that no appreciable difference on the rate of removal 203Hg was observed in each case of these solutions. It may be indicated that 203Hg is not simply absorbed on the surface of mercury metal, but is caught on the metal by exchange reaction. It was also found that 203Hg was rapidly and completely separated from 0.5 N HNO3 solution containing about Pb 1mg/ml using this exchange reaction technique with mercury metal.
