Abstract

In the two of Yasuda′s previous papers of this series (Bot. Mag. Tokyo, 1927), it was reported that the greater the difference in the physiological conditions of the flowers there was, the more successful was the result obtained from the pollination between them, even though they were of the same genetic condition.To make the cause of this phenomenon clear, an investigation was made on the characters of the secretions of the pistils. The results of such experiments pertaining to the fertility and germinating power of the pollens, both of which are influenced by either the secretion from the stigma of the same flower or that from the stigma of the different individual are reported in this paper.When the stigma which had been washed with water and smeared with the secretion from the stigma of a different individual was pollinated with the pollen taken from the same flower as that of the pistil, the fertilizing percentage, the size of either unfertilized overies or of fertilized capsules, the number, size, weight, as well as the germinating percentage of the seeds, the length of the seedlings etc. were found to be larger than those observed when the ordinary intra-self pollination had been made.The germinating percentage of the pollens was tested with two kinds of artificial media, each of which contained an optimum amount of sugar and PH value for their germination, but to the one the secretion from the stigma of the same flower was added and to the other that from the stigma of a different individual was mixed. The results showed clearly that the secretion from a different individual was beneficial to the germination of the pollen than that from the stigma of the same flower.
