Introduction

Io2 Papers of the Bibliographical Society of Canada 3I/ x index,' which includes references to: almanacs, blue paper, bookbinders, cancelled leaves, Celtic types, composed but not printed, compositors, corrections, engravings, fine/1arge paper, formats, French, Greek, Hebrew, job printing, Latin, letters, overruning [sic!], paper, parchment, plays, pressmen, proofs, proposals, receipts, recomposition, reimpression, reissue, sermons, shared printing, specimens, stationers, subscription editions, translations, verse, etc. When the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBs) was founded in 1804, the technology, techniques, and practices of the British book trades were totally inadequate to produce the Bible in the huge numbers and the variety of editions that were to appear over the sixty years. In her splendid history of the Society as publisher, Leslie Howsam has presented a masterly exposition and zo3 Books in Review / Comptes rendus def ence of her contention that the BFBs was a mIajor force in the transformation of the British book trades between 1804 and I864.
