Abstract

Schneider’s Zois in Nighttown is a comprehensive study of prostitution in Trieste when Joyce lived there. It documents Joyce’s use of brothels throughout his life, analyzing in great detail the impact that this practice and the attendant diseases contracted there have had on his writing, with a specific focus on the “Circe” episode of Ulysses .
