Abstract

Osteopetrotic (op) mice have a severe deficiency of osteoclasts. Defective bone resorption brings about cranial deformation in the mutant mice. In the present study, we examined cranial flat bone formation in this mutant mice by light and scanning electron microscopy. The parietal bone of the op/op mouse was found to grow only through the trabecular bone formation, with no subperiosteal bone lamellae usually formed in the normal mouse by periosteal bone deposition
