Abstract

By identifying the characteristics and functions of the Dragon King's Palace in Simcheong-jeon, this study explores the inner logic of the narrative world that constitutes Simcheong-jeon. The Dragon King's Palace has three characteristics: first, the palace is a space that resembles the heavens and is adjacent to the earth (land). The sea, where the Dragon King's Palace exists, is similar to the heavens and is in contact with the land. Second, it is the space beyond or between deaths, represented by the number of people. The process of reaching the palace beyond death is similar to glimpsing the secrets of the Simcheong-jeon world. Third, the palace is a space regulated by unreal or surreal order directly directed by the heavenly order. Therefore, the palace is summoned to resolve problematic situations in the heart. Thus, the Dragon King's Palace of Simcheong-jeon is the connection between the heavenly order and the human world. Through her experience there, Simcheong restores her damaged identity. The Dragon King's Palace is a space with gravity-like forces that propel Simcheong to move and provide her with unfamiliar experiences that allow her to assume a new identity and status through movement.
