Abstract

In early October of 1947, various groups of scientists working on A.E.C. projects were disturbed over the abrupt suspension of some of their number and the ensuing discussions with A.E.C. representatives. At their request the following paper was prepared and endorsed by a number of groups in the FAS. In the light of the recent action taken by the State Department and the President's Loyalty Review Board, it is anticipated that the A.E.C. will soon adopt procedures in this field to replace the interim procedures noted below. Byron Miller served as Associate General Counsel of the Office of War Mobilization and Reconstruction which acted for the administration in securing domestic atomic energy legislation. Harrison Brown is a member of the Chemistry Department and of the Institute for Nuclear Studies of the University of Chicago, and a trustee of the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists.
