AbstractAbstractLowton was the nearest town to Lowood School, and doubtless indicates the little market town of Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmoreland. Just as Jane Eyre joined the coach which was to bear her to her governess life and duties at 12 Millcote, SO it may have been at the door of the Royal Hotel in Kirkby Lonsdale that Charlotte Brontë and her sister Emily shook off the dust of Cowan Bridge when they left it as children in the autumn of 1825, with vivid memories deeply burnt into their brains and hearts. The Leeds and Kendal coach, however, passed the door of the school, and may have received them there. Kirkby Lonsdale is in Westmoreland Sheet 47 of the six-inch ordnance map, and Sheet 49 of the one-inch map.
