Abstract
Low-level cloud-motion winds are operationally derived from successive Meteosat infrared (IR: 10.5–12.5 μm) images. The operational cloud motion winds have been augmented by the tracking of cloud features in the visible (VIS: 0.4 – 1.1 μm) channel. The advantage of the VIS channel is a significantly better spatial resolution of 2.5 km × 2.5 km as compared to 5 km × 5 km in the IR. The higher spatial resolution improves the tracking which results in a larger number of low level cloud motion winds. The observed low-level wind fields are combined with the mixing ratios at 850 hPa over the Atlantic ocean from short term forecasts in order to compute zonal and meridional indices of the water vapour transport over the ocean.
