Abstract

Induction machines are simultaneously exposed to various power quality disturbances such as voltage deviation, voltage unbalance, and voltage waveform distortions. Lowered voltage quality may cause an increase in windings temperature rise, and consequently thermal loss of machine operational life. An effective method of protection of induction motors against overheating is derating – appropriate reduction of the load. Presently used derating methods have significant limitations. For some applications, they are either too complicated or too inaccurate. This study presents a novel derating method of an induction machine supplied with voltage of lowered quality. The proposed method was experimentally verified for three induction cage motors. The scope of this study is limited to low-power totally enclosed induction cage machines.
