Abstract

Viluceras is proposed as a new subgenus of Olcostephanus to accommodate a distinctive Argentinian Lower Cretaceous (Upper Valanginian) ammonite fauna originally assigned to the boreal genus Simbirskites and subsequently placed in Lemurostephanus . Based on extensive new collections from eight localities in the Neuquén Basin, three Viluceras species are described, including O. (Viluceras) duraznoensis sp. nov. With them occur rareO. (Olcostephanus) mingrammi (Leanza). The fauna characterises the Olcostephanus (Viluceras) permolestus Subzone, which may correlate approximately with the Himantoceras trinodosum Zone of the West Mediterranean Province.
