Abstract

By the time Lowenfeld reached the United States in 1938 he had spent half his lifetime in Vienna. This study examines Lowenfeld's Viennese experiences and analyzes the relationship of those experiences to his views and practices as an art educator in America. Particular stress is placed on the idiosyncratic quality of Viennese experience compared to experiences in American art and art education prior to Lowenfeld's rise to prominence in 1947 with the publication of Creative and Mental Growth. The study includes questions about the appropriateness of ideas developed from Austrian social and educational experiences and from Viennese aesthetic notions in the context of art education for Americans.
