Abstract

A windowless Si(Li) detector was calibrated in the energy range 0.53-14 keV. We used the continuous bremsstrahlung spectra produced by an electron beam on a thick carbon target as a reference. The theoretical shape of the spectra was calculated with the Wentzel formula corrected for attenuation of the soft radiation in a thick target. The continuous bremsstrahlung allows a very precise measurement of the discontinuities in the efficiency curve, which occur due to the x-ray absorption edges of the detector material. The accuracy of this calibration method is limited by the detector's resolution and by layers of ice on the crystal's surface.
