Abstract

The multilevel coding method is a powerful technique for constructing bandwidth efficient modulation codes systematically with arbitrarily large distance parameters from Hamming distance component (block or convolutional) codes in conjunction with proper bitsto-signal mapping through signal-set partitioning. The multilevel modulation codes constructed by this method allow the use of multi-stage decoding procedures that provide good trade-off between performance and decoding complexity. In this paper, constructions of multilevel modulation codes for both the AWGN and the Rayleigh fading channels are discussed. Distance parameters, such as the minimum squared Euclidean distance, minimum symbol distance and minimum product distance, which determine the error performance of a multilevel modulation code are expressed in terms of the minimum Hamming distances of the component codes. Error performances of some good multilevel modulation codes for either the AWGN or the Rayleigh fading channels are given. These codes achieve high performance with low decoding complexity.KeywordsRayleigh Fading ChannelModulation CodeDecode ComplexityComponent CodeCode ArrayThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
