Abstract

Describes the most-common eye conditions that can cause low vision and outlines the kinds of services required by low vision persons. Stresses that service must include not only ophthalmological examination and prescription of aids and devices along with training, but also must make available, when appropriate, orientation and mobility training and help from the rehabilitation disciplines. Describes space, equipment, devices, and manpower requirements for a Low Vision Service, and gives cost estimates. Draws largely on the 23-year experience of the New York Association for the Blind (Lighthouse) Low Vision Service.
