Abstract

In this work, the dynamic response of the clamped sandwich beams with fibre-metal laminate face-sheets under low-velocity impact is analytically and numerically studied. Analytical solutions for the dynamic response of clamped FML sandwich beams under low-velocity heavy-mass impact are developed based on modified rigid-plastic material approximation. Analytical results are compared with numerical ones, there is a good agreement between the two. The effects of foam strength, strength ratio of metal layer to composite layer, and composite volume fraction on structural response are discussed in detail. It is shown that foam strength has a substantial impact on the local denting deformation whereas strength ratio of metal layer to composite layer has a considerable impact on the overall bending of FML sandwich beams.
