Abstract

Abstract Silicon carbide (α-SiC) nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized at a temperature lower than 1000 °C using magnesium as a catalyst. The SiC nanoparticles were then characterized using XRD, FTIR spectrometer, TEM, and XPS. The XRD data analysis showed that the samples were successfully synthesized in a single phase of α-SiC with 6H-SiC crystal structure. Using the Scherrer equation, the particle size of the samples were in the range of 4 to 20 nm corresponding to the TEM result. Furthermore, the FTIR spectra produced several peaks on 775 to 816 cm-1 wavenumbers originated from Si-C bonds corresponding to the XPS spectra, the Si-C bonds at 101 eV and C-Si bonding energies at the binding energy of 283.34 eV.
